CHALLENGE

Riding the wave

Fresh off of starring in Netflix’s Battlefish, Tre-Fin was aiming to switch their business model from primarily wholesale to a Community Supported Fishery (CSF), and ride the wave of attention the series had provided. Tre-Fin needed help building a brand that stood out, educating their audience about CSFs and responsible fishing practices, and creating a sales funnel that brought new customers in. There was also a question of how to clarify what they do without changing their name—one that had been with them since the beginning of the company and meant a lot to them internally.

INSIGHT

CSF customers (and potential customers) want Tre-Fin to take a clear stand, while offering a connection to the source of their food—and the sea. 

OUTCOME

Raising the bar

Our positioning exercises made it clear that our main competition wasn’t other CSFs—it was mainstream fisheries that have caused consumers confusion and concern about what fish to choose. We helped the Tre-Fin team decide to put a stake in the ground about their practices under the umbrella “day boat seafood.” We added it to the company name, and Portland area diners are now seeing the phrase “day boat tuna” on menus at restaurants like Departure, Imperial, BlueHour and Bamboo Sushi.

Tre-Fin’s new brand, website and sales collateral take a clear stand against the fishing industry’s unsustainable and unhealthy practices, offer clear education to customers, and stand apart from the crowd by putting their bold, adventurous, and innovative attitude at the forefront. We think it’s really going to catch on (see what we did there?).
