CHALLENGE

Travel without leaving your couch

One of the loveliest historical landmarks and pieces of art on the Oregon Coast, the Astoria Column draws thousands of visitors every year to admire both the art on the exterior of the column and the incredible views of the area. It needed a website that could do two things well: 1) help prospective tourists understand the magic of a visit to the site, and 2) help educate those interested in the history of the piece—both the history of the region told in sgraffito around the exterior of the Column and the story of the Column itself.

INSIGHT

A great travel experience engages all of your senses—and a great travel website helps to do the same.

OUTCOME

History comes alive

We dove into the archives of the Clatsop County Historical Society to understand the history of the Astoria Column and its role in Astoria, and then spent weeks in Astoria itself to understand all that it has to offer—the Column is just one of a network of historical sites in the area, and we wanted to encourage visitors to see them all. Most importantly, our team focused on video featuring Astoria locals and high-resolution photography to help translate the experience of place. Even the very top of the Column can be seen in almost tactile detail, allowing viewers to appreciate the beauty of the most recent restoration and the history it represents.
